Corner shop

Mali

The Mali data collection is being managed by L-IFT. In Mali we are tracking a total of 18 corner shops: 4 in Yirimadjo district, 2 in Moussabou district, 4 in Sotuba district, 3 in Sirakoro district, and 5 in Hypodrome district. Our sample is made up of 6 groceries and provisions shops, 4 electronics and repair shops, 3 motorcycle spares dealers, 2 restaurants, 1 beauty products boutique, 1 hair salon, and 1 children’s toy shop. Out of the 18 corner shops 15 are run by men while 3 are run by women. The data collection in Mali started in January, 2021

Nigeria

The data collection in Nigeria is being managed by L-IFT. Here, we have been tracking six corner shops: all of which are located in two provinces in Edo state—Benin City and Ekpoma. Out of the total six corner shops, three are being run by women. Our sample includes four grocery shops, provisions store, and stationary shops, one shop that provides digital products and services, such as the sale of mobile, airtime, and repair services on mobile phones, and one shop for pastry and confectionery items, such as milk, sugar, and flour. The data collection in Nigeria started in April, 2020.

Senegal

The data collection in Senegal is being managed by L-IFT. Here, we have been tracking 14 corner shops. Of these corner shops, six are located in Mbour, four in Thiès, and four in Dakar. Five of the 14 corner shops are being run by women. Our sample has five shops, two money transfer shops that double as boutiques and sell phone accessories, one pharmacy, one boutique, one hotel and bar, one plastic shop, one gas station, one restaurant, and one sewing shop. The data collection in Senegal started in April, 2020.

Uganda

The data collection in Uganda is being managed by L-IFT. Here, we have been tracking 38 corner shops in Nakivale and Kiryandongo refugee settlements. Of the 38 corner shops, 18 are being run by women. Our sample includes 13 shops or grocery stores, six mobile money agents, four restaurants and bars, four beads-making and other foods outsidehome, three beauty salons, two bookshops, two water-selling businesses, one electronic shop, one bicycle spare parts store, one pharmacy, and one stationery shop. The data collection in Uganda started in April. 2020.

Zimbabwe

The data collection in Zimbabwe is being managed by L-IFT. Here, we have been tracking 18 corner shops: 15 shops in Bulawayo Province, one shop in Matabeleland South Province, and two shops in Matabeleland North province. This covers three out of the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. Out of the 18 corner shops, six are being run by women. Our sample includes eight supermarkets for groceries and provisions, one clothes boutique, one supermarket and bakery, one restaurant and butcher, five small counter-style tuck-shops for groceries and provisions, one butcher, and one bakery. The data collection in Zimbabwe started in April, 2020.

Bangladesh

The data collection in Bangladesh collection is being managed by the Hrishipara Financial Diaries project with funding from L-IFT. Here, we have been tracking five corner shops—all of which sell groceries or daily provisions. All five shops are located in the Kapasia area of Gajipur district. Out of the five, one is being managed by a woman. The data collection in Bangladesh started in June, 2020.

India

The data collection in India is being managed by MSC. In India, we have been tracking 25 corner shops: five each in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal. Out of the 25 corner shops, nine are being run by women. Our sample includes 10 grocery and provisions store, two hair salon and cosmetics shop, three CICO agents, four tailors and cloth ironing shops, three shops that provide digital products and services including a mobile shop or a cyber café, one eatery, one online store for selling religious items, and one medical store. The data collection in India started in November, 2020.

Indonesia

The Indonesia data collection is being managed by MSC, partnering with CU Lestari, a microfinance institution (MFI) in Central Java. In Indonesia, we have been tracking 25 corner shops in Wonosobo and Temanggung locations in Central Java. Out of these 25 corner shops, 19 are being run by women. Our sample includes 20 grocery and provisions stores, one salon, three CICO agents, and one mechanic. The data collection in Indonesia started in late October, 2020.
